The BenQ ScreenBar Halo solves a problem most people don't realize they have: uneven desk lighting that causes eye fatigue. After daily use for six months, here's our honest assessment.
What Makes a Monitor Light Different from a Desk Lamp?
A standard desk lamp illuminates your workspace but also creates glare by reflecting off your monitor's glossy surface. A monitor light bar mounts on top of your screen and directs light **downward** onto your desk only — no screen glare, no reflections.
The ScreenBar Halo goes further: it also projects **bias lighting** onto the wall behind your monitor. This reduces the contrast between the bright screen and dark room, which is the primary cause of eye strain during long sessions.
Build Quality
The ScreenBar Halo is a premium product. The aluminum body, silicone mounting clip, and touch-sensitive control dial feel like they belong on a $1,000 desk. The dial controls brightness and color temperature (2700K–6500K) with satisfying tactile feedback.
The mounting clip fits monitors 1–5.5cm thick. It doesn't damage the monitor and stays put even when you adjust screen angle.
Performance
**Front light:** 1000 lux at 40cm — bright enough to work without any other light source in the room.
**Back bias light:** Adjustable independently from the front. Warm amber tones at night, cooler daylight during the day.
**Auto-dimming:** The ambient sensor adjusts brightness as room light changes. Works well; avoids the blinding experience of walking into a dark room with a fully-bright monitor light.
The Downsides
At $229, this is an expensive monitor light. BenQ's own ScreenBar (without the halo back light) costs $109 and handles the core job equally well. The halo feature is a quality-of-life upgrade, not a necessity.
The wireless controller is convenient but requires its own USB port to charge.
Verdict
If you spend 6+ hours a day at your desk, the BenQ ScreenBar Halo is one of the highest-ROI desk upgrades available. The bias lighting genuinely reduces eye fatigue. Buy the standard ScreenBar if you're on a budget — both are excellent products.
